"THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT
Proposal for a Student Film Thesis
Submitted April 18, 1994 by
Heather Donahue

OVERVIEW: Western Maryland is home to one of the most enduring of all American folk legends--the Blair Witch. Since the late 1700s, there have been a number of disturbing incidents involving the disapperance of children from the Burkittsville area, all of which have been attributed to the Blair Witch.

My documentary will tell the story of the Blair Witch, trying to separate the known facts from the legend that has grown up around them. The heart of my film will be a weekend journey into the Black Hills Forest, the physical location for many of the legend's most famous incidents.

On-camera interviews will be intercut with footage of my journey, and form a significant portion of the film. Among those I will speak to:

Burkittsville Natives

Local Law Enforcement Officials on the Rustin Parr Case (Parr was a serial killer in the 1940s who murdered seven children on the supposed "instructions" of the Blair Witch)

Folklore Experts, including Bill Barnes of the Burkittsville Historical Society

I will need a sound person and a DP. I have approached Theresa Burkhart and Joshua Leonard, and both seem interested in the project.

I plan to film in 16mm black and white to create a more evocative piece. Filming will take place immediately after summer break, depending on people's schedules and availablity."

TEACHER'S COMMENTS: "Good Idea, Heather-come speak with me about SP, DP."
